Projects

Connecting the dots - Current thoughts and projects

Let me try to pull together some of ideas I've scattered around cyberspace, as well as provide additional detail. I'll do this in the form of a Q&A - I'll probably be revising this, adding clarity as time permits. Please don't hesitate to comment and/or ask me some questions.

Dynamic playlist generation using views

Earl Miles has integrated some very cool audio/playlist functionality into his Views Bonus pack. After trying it out on my test site (filtered on audio per user), and some helpful feedback, it's looking like there are all sorts of possibilities and applications.

Here are just a few of the things (I think) we can create:

  • playlist for any sort of music related article (posted about that here)
  • event and/or venue specific playlists - specific to those performing an event; upcoming/previous shows for a particular venue
  • location based - bands coming to a certain area
  • artist/album specific playlists
  • genre-based playlists
  • playlists for a specific year
  • maybe even playlists based on organic groups or buddy lists?

In addition to music, wouldn't the same sort of dynamic functionality work for other node types such as podcasts or even video?

Music/Arts/Technology collective

Form a group of alliances and/or partner companies, to collectively provide music/arts centric tools, services, and distribution networks.

Hyperlocal Music Community

Sort of a mashup between a public broadcasting network (NPR, BBC) and a hyperlocal citizen-journalism/media site (Lawrence.com, Texas Gigs). The site would provide a showcase for the best music and art in and around a local area. Users would have many opportunities to contribute and participate in both their online and real community.
  • Discover content they like via a wide array of tastemaker recommendations
    • Find other filters and recommendation systems
  • Become engaged and participate in online communities
  • Participate in their local community by coordinating and/or attending
    • Concerts and events
    • Benefits and fundraisers
    • Meetups and seminars about technology, citizen journalism, music education, etc.
Specific content aside, I'd like this style of site to be openly available as a Drupal distribution.

Structured content types and templates

Would like to use CCK and Content templates (contemplate) to build and output custom content types similar to what Structured Blogging provides for microformats. This seems to parallel some of the great work that Tane Piper and others are doing. A Drupal Microformat Group has also been set up.
